Red - I : Merry X Mass And A Happy New Beat

The Red Eye Monster Illustration by Chi

Red - I presents : MERRY XMASS & A HAPPY NEW BEAT (mixtape)

Red - I is an example of a snowball that started to roll just because there was a force inside him that pushed him. A force inside him that inspired him constantly. After this force pushed him, he never stopped rolling and has been growing and growing into a monster of centrifugal force. He has won several awards for DJ - ing and continues to destroy it in his field. Now, it's not enough to just win by yourself, you got to win and see everyone enjoy why you won. The man has a vision, and if you'd listen you might see it as well.

All is music. In every corner there are different kinds of hidden music that are amazing yet are hard to to find. The difference between Red's criteria and other DJs is that, he knows what music is for. He knows that music is for sharing. He knows that REAL music is for sharing. A principle that is highly respectable... the wisdom to not keep information from society... because for the culture to grow we all need to share with each other. And he knows that. Not only does this snowball keep growing he wants to take everybody with him.

Then came Dubplate:
1. Dubplate STARTED in Los Angeles independently around 2001 by 32Bar Productions that consists of 2 people: Don P & James Macion.

2. In 2005, Don P moved back to the PI and had a idea to spread the Dubplate vibe in Asia. After a few months of brainstorming he decided to team up with Red-i to start a Dubplate Manila chapter. Even that took a lil while cuz Red-i wasn't sure if PI was ready for something like this. Then finally in 2008, Red-i & Don P finally got on the same page and just said "fuck it and let do the damn thing" considering Red-I had a good following & Don P had the connects for international talents especially from the LA music scene.

3. The concept of a mobile soundsystem didn't even spark until after a few months of Dubplate Manila cuz there were always issue about the venues. With that said, The Red-i Mobile Soundsystem was launched in July 2009 that consists of Red-i, Soulflower, Don P and honorary members Caliph8, Salamangkero, etc...

- Don P (Thank you for the lesson, and I apologize for the lack of facts.)

Dubplate has brought in talents like DJ Shortkut and also, for their first year anniversary.. the Motherfucking Gas Lamp KillER (LA)! So what's special about dubplate? Well, it's an experience to go out and listen to music so raw and passion driven when played that you in turn, just enjoy the socks out of yourself. There is no pretention here, no VIPs nor SVIPs... everybody just listens and enjoys.
So obviously, like a snowball things are just getting bigger and stronger for us here in the Philippines in terms of culture is concerned.

There's something to learn from this children, if you want to achieve something... just do it.
Don't just do it, destroy it! And stop dilly dallying, 'cause the more you do the more you stop the force that pushes you.

Void Crew Train Hits

Void... I have nothing to say. How about that people? It's a train hit!

Son:Da - Mouse. Computer. Drawings

Son : Da is a two person creative orgy between two minds and a mouse. Metka Golec and Horvat Miha from Slovenia have conceptualized something very organice but somehow structured by digital media. This is not your average adobe illustrator children. There is no vectoring here, Son : Da has been working together since 2000 and their project called mouse drawings is literally the simplest way of explaining what they do that amazed me. From what I found out, they start from scratch without any sketch to trace. This was amazing to me because here in the Philippines most , if not all, draw and they trace it (vector).

Son : Da is different. Their concept is to produce something simply by using a mouse and see the possibilities that you can end up with it. This concept gives a much heavier universal philosophy of existentialism applied in their action and seen in this visual product of their work. Innovative digital media tool application in the modern world indeed. It's like they found a mouse and found a new way of using it.

I really like the way they expressed this concept through the eerie use of space, found only in dream like proportions (excuse my romanticism, but the images really made me remember some dreams of me being chased by a giant ball through corridors of large spaces) . At the same time they were able to apply this space / distance and connected subjects by using the stress surrounding them. It is somehow ironic in a way that a simple chord connected into a computer was able to struck many many chords in my brain.

KAWS X KIEHL'S

There is no denying that KAWS is one of my idols. From his cartoon style to the colors that he uses. He truly reminds me of a modern , more evolved Warhol. Seeing art applied and accepted in so many functional ways is something quite endearing to me. This time he worked with Kiehl's
100% of the net profits goes to different charities around the world. Plus they also did a cover/feature with Harper's Bazaar Korea. Talk about X dealing.

Dan Funderburgh x Think Faest x Poketo

Dan Funderburgh is a wallpaper designer from New York, known for his intricate designs aimed strongly at the decorative arts. The wallet is a Poketo x Faesthetic x Funderburgh collaboration. I am not so crazy on the clear plastic lining, but the print he has made is spot on and proper.

The Casket and the gas container are his latest and his earlier works respectively. The visual and utilitarian concept is what he draws from and they assert an ownership of things surrounding him, applying the decorative prints he creates into objects that are functional.

The Battle Between Puddles And Rivers

A wise man once told me:
"If you want to be inspired stop staying inside your personal space, stay in a place where you can absorb a lot of things." - Kiko Escora

Nature vs . nurture... this is the most back and forth, seasoned debate through child development. Growth, is the fruit that this debate oversees. Indeed, the seeds need to be of prime state but the quality of the fruit remains to be in question depending on how it is grown. I recently passed through Ateneo, from the grade school area to the high school to see how things have change almost ten years since I left Katipunan. There are changes here and there architecturally that I think they should have just preserved. Architectural preservation, yes...such a great premise for this post. What struck me the most, was the fact that there were no more children playing.

Back in the day, it was either playing ball or you played games like "touch-ball" (a local version of dodge ball). There was also agawan base, and luksong baka all of these Filipino games. Saying all these games we used to play , gave me a flash - back of the legendary game Pog...and the rise of the trumpo as well. A game that yes, even suburban grown kids played(spare me the ignorance).

All of these are games were played universally by all school kids way back... so i observed, and asked myself...what do they play now? Now, all you'll see are kids / young men sitting down in a line of benches attacking their PSPs and their Nintedo DS with as much amore as the pizza slices beside them. Take note.. it was most of them. Back in the day, us boys were known to be stinky, sticky and smelled like the sun. (now that's AMORE!) Now, these new boys smell like powder and they only seem to be sweating because their Solid Snakes have been discovered. These guys have now equaled the cleanliness that can be found in majority of all girl schools.

Gone are the days when children learn to interact face to face, verbally , looking people straight in the eye and learning how to read emotion. Gone are the days when, what you learn from playing in the streets you apply in campus or vice versa . Now, from what I see they interact with a barrier made from plastic, metal and powered by alkaline. Recently, I discovered that more and more Filipino children are turning out to be obese. In my day, you were very special when you were chubby... Or a little bit too chubby. Now it's becoming a norm? Not only that, it's becoming THE norm to just be in trapped inside the virtual world. Being in awe is fine, but being in awe in exchange for growth is just flat out lame.

What is at stake here? What's at stake here are two things; a child's pro - activeness and their health. So what's at fault? I think it's the fault of these parents who a). spoil their kids too much b).are undereducated in terms of taking care of their children and putting in a first hand experience c). Parents who choose convenience over quality of nurturing. Yes, you may be busy as a parent, trying to keep the family's belly full and under the roof, but nothing beats TLC. And d). Kids who don't / never dare to check their horizons. People don't grow exponentially boxed inside a controlled environment with limits... they belong in fields to roam around in. Isn't that how humans evolved? By walking around and exploring their surroundings.

What should not be lost in our country is the art of exploration... exploration of environment, of one's self and also the exploration of capabilities.

eyelids

Based on a children's book written by Brad Bischoff. This short film is about an artist who falls in love with a girl and wishes to be her eyelids more so than a partner. Giving a bigger meaning of presence in a person's life rather than just a partner... who would have ever thought that just being a small part in a person's anatomy, could mean so many things? What more if they were part of your life? Eyelids is a story about relationships. To me, it is a confession of being content by just being a part of someone's life.
